Comment of the Day: The Sleepy Streets Harris County Flood Buyouts Left Behind

COMMENT OF THE DAY: THE SLEEPY STREETS HARRIS COUNTY FLOOD BUYOUTS LEFT BEHIND There is a community close to 290 and Windfern, on Cole Creek Dr. and another near Fairbanks and Hollister on Woodland West. Deep in the flood neighborhoods that were bought back by Harris County Flood [Control District] a while ago. All of the roads, utilities and everything are there. Just no homes or homeowners. Made a great place to take a post-lunch car nap when I worked close by. [bocepus, commenting on The Latest Wave of Harris County Home Buyouts, Mapped] Illustration: Lulu

  • I’ve brought up Creekside Estates & Woodland Trails West II on a few occasions here. I grew up off Battle Oak & Fairbanks and witnessed this whole thing. Allison was the 3rd flood for many of these homes, which meant no more flood insurance so they were bought out. Since thee neighborhoods have been taken out, we have had no flooding issues around Fairbanks, that includes Harvey. It worked, some areas of Houston are just going to have to do this. It sucks to lose property taxes from them but sometimes it’s best to just cut the fat.

  • Those would be good places for parks with playing fields for soccer, baseball, cricket, etc. There are few enough places in the county for adults to play league sports; more would be welcomed. HCHSA or some other agency should look into developing these otherwise useless tracts of land into dual-purpose recreational/flood control properties, similar to how Bear Creek, Cullen, and George Bush parks are done.

Why is something useless if it’s not useful to humans? Ugh. So tired of soccer fields. How about some natural grasses? How about some wooded walking trails that allow a habitat for birds and deer and rabbits? Why does every empty spot need to be developed into something?
