Joe’s Crab Shack Is Now Completely Gone from Houston, but It’s Still Clinging to the Seawall in Galveston

The last pair of remaining Joe’s Crab Shack restaurants in Houston — at 2120 S. Hwy. 6, just north of the West Oaks Mall (pictured above), and at 20100 Hwy. 59 in Humble — closed this week, leaving the Seawall location in Galveston as the region’s sole outpost of the seafood chain. Three other Houston-area locations shut down earlier this month, ahead of the chain’s repurchaseapproved in bankruptcy court last Thursday — by restaurant and entertainment giant Landry’s.

The original Joe’s Crab Shack opened in 1991 at 6218 Richmond Ave. (between Hillcroft and Fountain View); it was bought by Landry’s 3 years later and by 2006 had transformed into a 120-restaurant chain.

According to the Joe’s website, which for the most part appears to be keeping up with the latest unannounced closings, the chain is now down to 66 locations nationwide (14 in Texas) — though more may drop before Landry’s officially takes over early next week.

  • Something called The Rustic Bull is supposed to be opening in the Richmond Ave spot according to the banner out front. Cannot find a lick of information on this place to save my life. So now I look to you, Swamplot to find out.

  • Where am I going to get my BBQ Dungeness crabs??????

  • As a former employee of Joes Crab Shack (like 15 years ago for 1 summer), I’m okay with this.

    Signed,

    Your neighborhood murdering millennial.

  • @Cricketty, you can find business licenses at the Harris County Clerk’s website under “Assumed Names”. In this case, an LLC, whose address is the same as that of a firm of liquor law attorneys, has registered the same establishment under 10 different names:
    – (The) Rustic Bull
    – (The) Rustic Bull Bar
    – (The) Rustic Bull Club
    – (The) Rustic Bull Sports Bar
    – (The) Rustic Bull Restaurant and Bar

According to TABC, the liquor license is a Dec 2016 reissue of an original from Dec 2010 and expires Dec 2018. This license was previously issued to an establishment named PUB XS at the same 6218 Richmond address. A search for that bar name yields an interesting result: https://www.tabc.state.tx.us/public_information/pfd_2012/Patio-Pub.pdf
