Houston Alternator’s West Heights location is getting a tuneup. Owners of the 6,000-sq.-ft. auto center, located on the busy N. Shepherd–W. 19th St. intersection’s southwest corner, are remodeling the 1960 vintage building for restaurant and retail use. But remixing N. Shepherd’s former auto care zone of used car dealerships and repair shops won’t stop there.

In about 6 months, renovations will shift over to the 8,000-sq.-ft. center next door and set back from W. 19th St. (marked “Existing Center” in the site plan above). The pair of pending projects is across the street from Re:Vive Development’s reboot of the center at 1901 N. Shepherd Dr., at the northwest corner, now offering a sweet lineup of ice cream, smoothies, doughnuts — and sushi. And a source reports that landlords of the lube and tuneup center at 1818 N. Shepherd Dr., on the southeast corner of the same intersection, are also adjusting the tenant mix there.
Directly to the south of Houston Alternator, new restaurant Hunky Dory is going into the spot at 1819 N. Shepherd Dr., formerly the home of SalMex Auto Truck Sales.

Would be better news if they demo’d both buildings and rebuilt w/ 5-ft setbacks and parking in rear.

$42/SF, prices are starting to climb but this intersection will be well worth the rent!!
As a local Heights resident, I love how the landlords are respecting the existing structures. This is going to be very exciting to watch everyday on my way to work.
Will the ground have to be remediated? And, in the interest of fresher air, perhaps the cigar shop on 19th could be relocated over there.
