The Nextdoor Strip That Surfhouse and Houston Panini Might Scoot Into on W. 34th St.

Re:Vive redevelopment at 34th and Ella, Oak Forest, Houston, 77018

1727 W 34th St, GO/OF, Houston, 77018ReVive’s plans to redo the shopping strips at the southwest corner of 34th St. and Ella Blvd. in Oak Forest look like they may keep a few existing businesses in the center, though some shuffling about may be involved. The rendering up top comes from the redeveloper’s leasing flier for the corner, which shows a makeover of several existing buildings along with plans for a few new pad sites. The flier depicts Surfhouse surf and skate shop (currently in a building next door slated for demo) snuggled into the spot recently evacuated by T-Shirt Works. The door next to that is marked with the logo for Pop & Pan (the eventual new name of Houston Panini & Provisions, pictured above in its current location facing 34th).

The siteplan included with the renderings clarifies some of the changes that might be carried out — the 2 existing buildings that form the L-shaped center rendered above are seen below on the left:

The half-empty strip currently holding the panini and surf shops looks to be gone, leaving the tiny freestanding Express Wheel & Tire kiosk all by its lonesome on the upper right of the plan above (and surrounded by some new drive-thru lanes). Meanwhile, the footprint of another new building is depicted just south of the one that’s missing, pushed into line with the storefronts rendered above. Further south, the pad site shown along Ella on the lower right currently houses Heights Cleaners Laundry & Alterations; the dip in the property boundary on the Ella side skirts around the current location of RJ’s Boot Co. (about were the parking chart has been placed).

The renderings of the existing L-shaped center slated for redo seem to keep at least an echo of similar business types in place. The current site of Ricardo’s Barber Shop is labeled “Hair Salon” on the far left of the frame below; next door, a spot labeled Pool Supplies is marked where the existing MedQuip Medical Supplies is located (once Herbert’s Watch Repair):

The Chris Alterations & Dry Cleaning spot, right on 34th at the end of the strip, could be getting a more dramatic change:

The renderings show several restaurants, including one with a patio space in the corner of the L:

  • You need to do a story on the owner of RJ’s Boot Co. My wife has met him, and he is quite a character. Be careful if you drop by – apparently the “heat” is never very far away!

  • Thank you for using proper Italian! “Panini” is plural whereas “panino” is singular.
