I’ll never forget the time I was walking in Mainz, Germany when I took a wrong turn and ended up in the middle of a public garden. It was a long row of mini-gardens on each side of a walkway, each plot being about 25 feet square. When I inquired about it, I was told that each plot was rented annually by locals for a small fee from the government who owned the land. I was amazed at how the people took great pride in their little gardens, even setting up sitting areas and sheds with porches inside them as an evening hang out spot. It was a great way to build community, promote walking (to and from the garden to their homes), beautify otherwise idle urban land, and produce fresh, local food.
Wish Houston would marshall something like that…
