UNMARKED GRAVES UNCOVERED IN DICKINSON AFRICAN-AMERICAN CEMETERY 
Over the weekend, volunteers clearing brush and whacking weeds at the Magnolia Cemetery, the African-American cemetery between League City and Dickinson near FM 646 and Highway 3, found hundreds of unmarked graves that date back before the Emancipation Proclamation. Now, reports abc13’s Erik Barajas, the Galveston County Historical Commission is working to identify the graves as the cemetery seeks state designation and protection as a historic site: Pastor William H. King III of Greater New Hope Missionary Baptist Church, behind which sits Magnolia Cemetery, tells Barajas: “‘There are slaves buried here. I live in Pennsylvania. I came across this as I was doing family research and very interested to know more. This is the family cemetery for my father’s family. I know for certain that my paternal grandparents, great grandparents and great great grandparents are buried here. Can anyone share any information on the efforts to identify graves?

I am working on this cemetery and have a list of 550 people buried there, some from tombstones and most from death certificates that indicate they were buried there in unmarked graves. Please send me the names of your family burials and I will tell you what we have on them.

Thank you, Melody. My grandmother, Olivia Hall Matthews, has a headstone. I know my grandfather, Frank Matthews is buried near her. I also am fairly certain that my grandmother’s parents, Robert B. Hall and Eliza Bass Hall and her stepmother Nancie Hall are also buried there. My grandfather’s parents, Timothy Matthews and Emma (Polk?) Matthews may also be nearby. I really appreciate anything you can tell me. I have a business trip to Houston in July and plan to visit the old homesteads in Galveston, Dickinson and League City.
