Best thing about 888 was the Chinese-language menu I didn’t understand. I ate a lot of mystery meat from that menu. Tasty, scrumptious total unknowns.

One after the other, falling like dominoes, are the staple restaurants of my years as a UH student. Thelma’s BBQ moved, then closed. Ninfa’s sold, went upscale. Van Loc, gone. Thien An, moved. Frenchie’s, gone. Kim Hung, closed. 888, on the demo list. It feels like I caught the one final sputtering gasp of Houston’s authenticity — and that feeling is how I know that nothing has actually changed except for me: I’m a old man now. Hey you kids, get off my lawn!
Avocado toast and lattes will constitute the pinings of this generation in 40 years…
