MAKES THE ART REAL Artist and punk rocker Mark Flood — who made a practice of setting up studio space in decaying, abandoned buildings — explains Houston to New York Times arts blogger Randy Kennedy: “Q. You’ve described Houston as an “oil-stained, overdeveloped parking lot, packed with cars, littered with advertising, designed for profit, not people.†Why have you stayed there all these years? A. I don’t hear any anger in that description. Merely truth telling, which freaks people out. I’ve just always liked Houston. I could operate there. I could drive around. I had a pickup truck. And it was a city that fed my work with something — I call it reality. Houston is more real than most places, more real than New York.” [NYT]
I have to agree with Mr. Flood’s description. And the reason he stayed.
Wait just a cotton picking minute, I thought cities had to have light rail to be real?
Matt: We actually do have light rail. So we must be real.
7.5 miles of toy train makes Houston real! hahaha!
New York City does NOT have light rail. Thanks for playing.
Houston isn’t real. Everything around you is just in your head. The websites (like this one) you keep coming to in order to check up on what’s new in Houston aren’t real either. We are all having one mass hallucination.
If you don’t think Houston is real enough, just pack your bags and go! Stupid ignorant people like y’all complain how bad Houston is yet y’all still stay and live here!? Houston is an amazing city and there isn’t any other place I rather be!! Go move to Dallas its boring and lame just like y’all! And there building more rails!!! FYI!
Flood was in the band Culturcide. Here’s their tribute to Houston lawmen: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G0ZUUwvwD8w
That’s about as real as it gets.
’tis true. Going off sheer number of miles of LRT, Dallas bests all comers. Granted, you move there, you’re going to have to get used to eating El Fenix. But such are the tradeoffs one must make…
Number Nine deserves comment of the day
And Culturcide holiday tunes are timeless…

I have no idea what “real” means in this context. I grew up in the NYC area. It’s pretty freaking real.
