A Heliport Lands in Spring Branch East

A HELIPORT LANDS IN SPRING BRANCH EAST Helicopter, 1495 N. Post Oak Rd., HoustonA Swamplot reader is wondering what the story is behind a new helipad that’s landed on the almost-12-acre former industrial site at the northwest corner of the intersection of N. Post Oak Rd. and Westview Dr.: “About a month or more ago they cleared all the brush. A couple of weeks ago they took out the crappy wire fencing. Then they put up a nice tall wooden fence around about half the property. Last week, a helicopter showed up! Google Earth shows the nice new helicopter landing pad, along with a support building. The last thing I expected in Spring Branch was a heliport!” County property records show the lot at 1495 N. Post Oak Rd. was purchased in April of last year by an entity called NPO 1495 LP. A new driveway blocked by a keypad-operated gate now extends off of N. Post Oak and leads to the pad, in the northwest corner of the site, our copter-spotter continues, and adds: “It’s damned weird.” Photo: Swamplot inbox

  • That LLC, NPO 1495 LP is registered at an address downtown which is the same as NPO 1403 LP. The registered agent is Douglas Kelly, the president of Hilcorp Ventures, an apparent sub of Hilcorp Energy. Hilcorp is the company that is currently building at the old Foleys site downtown.

  • I guess this wanted a heliport, so he got one…

  • This is Jeff Hildebrand’s personal heliport. It is close to his house in River Oaks and a direct result of the growing traffic problems in Houston. If you don’t like the drive to Hobby to get on your helicopter, build a heliport… Maybe his new building downtown will also include a helipad???

  • I remember back in the 80’s when there were choppers all over town. There was a landing pad at the Westchase Hilton and you could take a chopper from the Galleria to IAH Free with a paid ticket on Eastern Airlines. It got so out of hand that the city passed new ordinances severely limiting the pads. Tilman Fertutta had quite a go with the city to get the pad at the Aquarium and at his location near I-10 & 610 Loop approved. I wonder what are the restrictions on these things now?

  • Personal investment/helipad. He was using the pad at Star Motor Cars on Old Katy previously. I am sure if you bought a couple Ashton Martins Dennis, they would let you use it too.

  • “Opulence, I has it!”

  • Sounds like Illuminati to me …

  • Armadillo Airways was the service that flew to IAH from the Galleria, Whitehall Hotel (downtown), Shamrock Hilton and the Westchase Hilton. Flights cost $49 each way. The service was started by the son of the inventor of the Weed Eater.

I remember my dad taking this service from an earlier location in the Globe Department Store parking lot at the SW corner of what is now I-10 & Beltway 8. This all went away with the mid-80’s oil bust. Here is an old pamphlet: http://www.timetableimages.com/ttimages/arm.htm.
