  • Re: TMC. I have one word for Texas Medical Center, Inc. That word is “Astrodome”. No, seriously. The site you want to develop is only special because its a big block of acreage. Otherwise, its location is non-strategic. You’ve already got convention and conference facilities integrated into NRG Park, which enables you to massively scale up TMC-sponsored events as necessary. You have the light rail connection, freeway adjacency and visibility, and plenty of parking that is unused on most days. Convert the Astrodome into a permanent medical exposition with dedicated office and conference facilities, and line the entrance to NRG Park from the light rail station along Fannin toward the Astrodome with a row of retail, restaurants, bars, hotels, and other supporting uses.

TMC, Inc. is also an entity that has experience with adaptive re-use of an obsolete structure. And its also one of the few entities with enough political goodwill to take on the Texans and the HLS&R, both of which have abused their leverage with the County. Doing this would also be a PR coup on a national scale, and PR attracts both talent and high-net-worth patients.

  • @Niche: Your idea makes too much sense to ever happen.

  • @TheNiche: Great idea! The permanent medical exposition could have a special focus on spectator sport medicine: diabetes, high blood pressure, alcoholism, chicken wing caught in throat, etc.

  • The county doesn’t want Reliant Park to be a completly open facility, that’s why it has a fence around it. TheNiches idea, tho not a bad one, won’t fly. The Dome is doomed.
