The Houston City Club, best known to passersby as that parking-garage-like building tucked deep in Greenway Plaza across Norfolk St. from Lakewood Church — and to members and guests as perhaps the best indoor tennis venue in the city — will be shutting down forever on June 12th. On the sorta-main-entrance side off City Club Dr. between Edloe and Timmons, the athletic club and event venue has this classic view onto the Greenway Plaza plaza between office buildings Greenway 9 and 11:

Members of the 38-year-old club will be able to find accommodation (if not the same experience) at one or more of the other Houston-area clubs owned by parent company ClubCorp, including the Downtown Clubs at The Met and Houston Center and the Houston Club downtown, the Bay Oaks and Hearthstone Country Clubs, and the South Shore Harbour Country Club in League City.
The facility at 1 City Club Dr. will be taken over by Life Time Fitness, which reportedly has plans to demolish the tennis courts and build an additional story on top of the 3-level structure.

That’s unfortunate. There’s already a lifetime at Richmond & Weslayan and another at Holcombe and Greenbriar. I suppose now there will be a moderate rush over to GTAC for the last of the area indoor tennis courts.
The club was not watching its demographic well. Undercut by crossfit, cheaper big box, and Equinox on higher end disposable. Hardworking young Greenwayer’s chose a different option over convenience. Energy downturn hit corporate subsidies to join.
LA Fitness is at the corner of Richmond and Weslayan. This will be Lifetime’s first location inside the loop.
Having said that, I couldn’t tell you the difference between these different brands of gyms.
Very unfortunate. There is already a shortage of good indoor tennis courts for a city of our size. Another Life Time facility just dilutes the character of the city even further. Life Time is rich in snob appeal, lousy when it comes to customer service, and that’s before you get into the issue of their contract policies.
