Just this morning, a federal judge ordered developer Urban Living to pay nearly $28 million to Houston home design firm Preston Wood & Associates. Preston Wood sued Urban Living in 2016, claiming that the developer and its business partners made unauthorized use of copyrighted townhome plans Preston Wood had provided 2 years earlier.
The plans were used to build and market 5 developments — including Patterson Street Landing, shown at top just north of Wash Ave. Another, EaDo Place, went up on Polk between Nagle and Live Oak. in 2015:
***
Construction on all 5 sites began after Urban Living inked a license agreement in 2014 to use some of Preston Wood’s designs. But according to the design firm, Urban Living never notified it that construction was beginning at any of the townhomes based off the plans, as required by the contract. On top of that, Urban Living also allegedly sublicensed the plans to one of its subsidiaries, Oppidan Homes, without providing a heads-up to Preston Wood, another breach of the agreement. Together in their marketing efforts, both Urban Living and Oppidan later passed around depictions of the developments that Preston Wood says were derivatives of its designs.
At Nagle Park Place — pictured below north of Navigation Blvd. — Cameron Architects allegedly also infringed on Preston Wood’s work through its dealings with Urban Living:
It’s been ordered to pay a much smaller sum: $13,000.
The other 2 problem spots are Stanford Street Landing, just south of Richmond . . .
and 4504 Mount Vernon St., between Richmond and 59:
Urban Living’s attorney Justin Strother tells Swamplot that he and his client “strongly disagree with the judgment,” and hope that the court will hear them out in post-judgment hearings.

Wow — the hits keep coming for Vinod. Couldn’t happen to a nicer guy…
Oh man!
Poor Vinod. Hahahahahah. Guy just can’t get out of his own way.
This looks pretty bad. Who’s Vinod and what other things have happened?
LOL!!!!!!
J, Vinod is to Ethical as Cancer is to Health
Hard to pick a side in this fight. (Jack) Preston Wood previously on Swamplot:

I didn’t really expect such a case could be successfully litigated! Does it not matter that Preston Wood puts their plans all over Pinterest?
Why would anyone want to copy these designs in the first place? Most look like variations of a milk carton.
But really, isn’t every townhome just a copy of every other townhome…
Well, that business model was sure to come to an end at some point. Preston is a good guy, I am sure he will put Vinood millions to much better use than he would of.
Has Urban Living ever been honest or decent? I’ve never heard anything good about them, whether in sales or construction. And I’ve heard plenty of bad.
Time to sell the precious “white collection” of cars
Give me a backyard on the roof and I could possibly live in a town house.
You couldn’t pay me to live in any UL townhouse. I used to build houses and just by looking at some of the product UL built, I would tell any prospective buyer look somewhere else. A lot can be covered up by sheetrock, brick, synthetic stucco, etc.
Could be the greatest outpouring of Schadenfreude ever on this blog.
Vinod’s always been a shady guy. Not surprised at all.
This likely just bankrupts Vinod’s companies. Agree with many readers that UL is one of the worst home builder in the area. I used to live off Washington Ave and saw it first hand. UL’s strategy was to build and sell to the 200-400k range first time buyers and starter homes. He tried his hand at higher end market in the Heights and the low quality falls apart fast in 500k+ market.
I am not a fan of Preston either but legally it is his money (whatever the final sum ends up being) to do whatever he wants to do with. I would donate it all to a building archecture local non-profit if it were me.
Stucco shoe box monstrosities; unsightly, poorly built, and vastly overpriced.
If someone in law enforcement were to follow the money and survey duped buyers, a civil judgment would be the least of their worries in my opinion.
Vinod is not a very ethical guy that is for sure. Would never buy from Urban Living again.
