A reader reports on the newest bright spot on Lower Westheimer:
My photo isn’t terribly good, but it will at least give you an idea of what they’re up to with the new marquee. Half of the upper neon is working and the marquee is completely operational. Even without everything functioning, it already puts the River Oaks to shame. It’s still not going to be as outrageous as the original setup with the taller spire and even more neon, but it’s a step in the right direction.

But if we don’t get the sign from 1955 to 1985 before the lightning storm, Annise Parker will never be born!
They were working on the very top of the spire today, looks like they’re going full-tilt on the restoration. And with the DeLuxe being redone, this is looking to be quite the year for Houston’s classic film houses. (Good luck Alabama, still not optimistic on your future)
Now find someone to restore the old Martini Theatre in Galveston since they razed the Broadway and it’s the only one left on the island.
Yay! This is heartwarming.
Kirston – I too worry about the Martini. As a BOI, I grew up on the Island and saw “Foul Play” and “On Any Sunday” there. Someone at the Galveston Daily News site commented on an article about the possible demolition, and wondered why it mattered. It matters because it is VINTAGE Art Deco! That’s why. Duh.
