Former Downtown Sheraton-Lincoln Hotel Disappearing from Above

A reader whose office faces the old Sheraton-Lincoln Hotel at 711 Polk St. downtown reports that demolition work on the former Beatles hangout is now “in full swing”:

They are taking down the building literally floor by floor. So far they have removed all the utilities on the roof and the entire top floor. Seems like a very labor intensive project. I plan to take a picture everyday and make a time lapse video. Can watch it in reverse and pretend they are revitalizing southern downtown!

  • I can hear the tenants in Total Plaza cheering as each floor is removed. So what’s going on with the demolition? Recycling instead of TNT?

  • That’s wild.

I was sitting here in my office as I read this, thinking, “That building looks familiar.”

Sure enough, I have a good view of it from my office window. Not as good as the reader who took this pic (from the federal building?), but still…

Hey, if s/he’s taking pics from the federal building, does that the promised time lapse video taxpayer funded?

  • They had to tear it down – couldnt demo it – they plan to keep the 3 story underground parking and put greenspace on top – probably for the tax breaks. Plus its too close to the other one to blow it up. Cost is about 1.5 million to tear down I was told – ANd yes they are recycling it all.

As for the other poster – pic is from the Exxon building and I would say about 28th floor or so

    Please do.

  • It looks to me that the picture was taken from the Exxon building.

  • There are some keen eyes here. I took the picture… and yes it is from the Exxon building. 20th floor, so the 28th floor was a pretty good guess.

They are averaging 1 floor every 2-3 days, so it shouldn’t take too long before the building is gone.

  • Good! One down, only oh, a half-dozen to go.

  • If anyone has any photos they would like to share I would love to have some. My company is doing a reality show that has been picked up by the producers of Coal, Deadliest Catch, etc & I am trying to get as many photos (time lapse, etc.) to make about a 5 minute reel. If anyone would like to share I would love to see what you have. You can email them to me directly at Danette@GITNowMedia.com.

Thanks & I look forward to seeing what you all have taken.

  • I am interested in anyone who has taken photos, videos, etc. Of this demolition. My company has a new reality show that has been picked up by the producers of Coal, Deadliest Catch, etc. I am wanting to make about a 5 minute reel of workers, the process, time lapse, etc.

If anyone would like to share what they have I would greatly appreciate it. The reality show is called Steel “Sky High Danger.” If anyone knows of any construction sites we could get on to interview some of the workers to get a feel for what we want the characters to be like please email me.

Thanks & I look forward to seeing all of what everyone has captured.

  • I am sad to see it go. My first job after moving to Houston in 1977 was Sales Secretary for the Sales and Convention staff in the Sheraton-Houston (as it was known then) from 1977 to about 1979ish. I have alot of great memories of the people I worked with, as well as some pretty great ones of some of the things that happened there. My first convention was the NOW (National Organization for Women) convention. I will never forget struggling and failing to find a suitable mutual topic of conversation while stuck on an elevator with members of COYOTE (the prostitute’s union from San Franciscso) and some ladies representing Sara Coventry Jewelry (i.e., “ladies like my mom’s bridge club”) Also the wonderful OTC conventions, and so many more….Well, time does move on…..
