Comment of the Day: How To Build on the Eighth Wonder’s Emergency Housing Legacy

COMMENT OF THE DAY: HOW TO BUILD ON THE EIGHTH WONDER’S EMERGENCY HOUSING LEGACY Astrodome“We’ve already got a built structure that has housed people in distress before. We are already paying millions of dollars a year in upkeep for a useless building. Showers, bathrooms, food prep, these services all already exist in this space. We’ve got a round peg, let’s just fit it into the round hole: The Astrodome is the perfect building to house our homeless!” [toasty, commenting on Mansion Flats Reincarnated; What a Homeless Campground Might Cost; previously on Swamplot] Photo of Astrodome: Russell Hancock via Swamplot Flickr Pool

  • Wait, you mean the astrodome belongs to the city and not HLSR & the Texans?

  • I’m in complete agreement with this regardless of stigma that comes with large homeless populations. Great access, services can all be on site and create instant jobs for residents who can then become responsible renters, can be a sanctuary for rehabilitation, secure location, and it can really create serious upward mobility.

  • Hmmm. The homeless are also domeless.

  • This would be an awesome use of the space. Like Adoile said, it’s a great location for people looking for service industry and other entry level jobs, as well as those who are seeking education. Done correctly, it would a unique feature of Houston that would show our ingenuity, respect for personal accountability, as well as our compassion. Too bad it will never happen.

  • Dumb comment of the day, actually.

  • This is a great idea. Just add in some local selectahs and the AURA soundsystem and you’ll have a proper “Children of Men” vibe going.

  • @OhBrother…”Dumb comment of the day, actually.”
    .
    Ed, is that you?

  • The cost of keeping the Dome intact per year is not “millions.” It is $171,000.

  • Limestone:

No. Perhaps you internet homeless activists should all pass the hat to come up with some $$ to house them somewhere..

  • Oh boy, I can hardly wait. Just in case you thought there were no homeowners nearby who love to NIMBY this idea to death.
