As for the Macy’s story, I’d surprised if the Greenspoint Mall one isn’t on the list when it’s released. Once the largest Foley’s when it opened in 1976, the last time I was there, they had closed off the second floor to customers.
They had better spruce up the old Arena Theater since Sugar Land has a brand new concert hall opening up soon.
It’ll be interesting to see if any of the new apartment complexes inside the loop will be forced to go down-market. It would be great to see more affordable housing and a more diverse number of people able to live inside the loop. Even better would be for complexes to start offering units as purchasable condominiums.
BTW here is the original, more detailed Transwestern occupancy report https://www.transwestern.com/api/data/resource/?id=%2fresearch%2fDocuments%2fSouhwest+-+Houston+Multifamily+Outlook+-+Mid-Year+2016.pdf&h=532714ef7cb51b4c8e9839ef7efd355d
The macy’s article reminded me of a great slideshow in the chron on the history of malls in Houston: http://www.chron.com/news/houston-texas/houston/article/Houston-s-biggest-malls-through-the-years-9139655.php#photo-10748372
It is amazing how NW Mall, Northline, Gulfgate, Almeda and others declined so rapidly once the original Houston suburbs of the 60s and 70s emptied out for the new suburbs outside the beltway in the 90s. It will also be interesting to see whether the current patterns of gentrification will reach any of these old malls. NW mall is starting to be enveloped by gentrification in GOOF and Spring Branch. But others are just too far from any decent redevelopment.
@Derek, some links for you regarding apartment -> condo and condo -> apartment in Houston. Condos in Houston are generally NOT a good investment.

Re Macy’s: I worked for Foley’s and then Macy’s for nearly 16 yrs, 2 of them at Willowbrook. That has been a number of years ago. When I was there, it was quite busy, and for me a promotion when I was transferred there from First Colony. The income base for the surrounding neighborhoods must have declined quite a bit for it to be considered for closing. I would think Greenspoint would go before Willowbrook.
There’s been two other anime stores in Houston in the recent past. Both have long-since closed.
Planet Anime was in the Rice Village for a decade. Until a few years ago, Domy bookstore, in Montrose, sold Japanese toys and collectibles.
BTW, for those interested, there’s going to be a big Japanese Culture convention at the George R. Brown in April 2017 called Anime Matsuri. Check out http://www.animematsuri.com.
Wired Up seems to be the spiritual successor of Domy Books. It’s fairly small at the moment and they seem to have replaced most of their anime oriented stuff with niche music. Still a good selection of all the weird books too. I think Domy and Wired Up shared a manager.
