A fire that broke out in the kitchen of Spanky’s Homemade Pizza early this morning did considerable damage to the structure, reports Click2Houston’s Courtney Gilmore. But if you’re wondering about the “kitchen staff wanted” sign posted outside, or how owner Frank Roache could possibly declare on camera that the restaurant, which has been open on the South Loop feeder road at Woodridge only since 1976, would be “back up and running in about 6 weeks,” here’s a little background:
The much larger Gabby’s Bar-B-Que next door to Spanky’s at 4659 Telephone Rd. closed down earlier this year.

Spanky’s received permits to remodel and add on 1,192 sq. ft. of space to that location in March, for a new restaurant named Spanky’s Pizza, Pasta, and Amore. Roache didn’t tell Gilmore what his plans were for all the burnt pizzas, kitchen equipment, and roasted building parts in the Gulfgate-area restaurant’s current location at 7210 South Loop East, but the 6-week timetable was for the brand-new Spanky’s on the other side of the parking lot.

What a shame, I knew they were moving buildings but this is a fun local spot that I hope recovers soon.
I hope they reopen. They serve a very respectable pizza, dirt cheap.
