The current pallor of the departed Whataburger #292 (on Mt. Houston Rd. between the Veterans Memorial Dr. Fiesta shopping center and the Templo Aposento Alto) offers a stark, ethereal contrast the structure’s previous traditional getup of What-a-Orange stripes. The restaurant has stood in the spot since the early eighties, surrounded by a heavy salting of auto garages and related businesses; it appears to have been operational through at least November of last year before blanking out. Will the peaked bones of the fast food joint be reanimated to new purpose? Or is the new coat of whitewash merely a shroud, applied before the building is allowed to rest in pieces at last?

There’s another one in Humble along 59 just south of Main St. The new Whataburger they built to replace it is a mile or two away and much more inconvenient :(
There is a close Whataburger on 45 South painted the same color with a newly build one in front of it.
It’s a GHOST WHATABURGER!
hold me!
There’s another white-washed Whataburger in Beer Creek on Hwy 6. I noticed it yesterday driving by. It was my local Whataburger growing up. It was probably built in the 80’s. A few blocks away, there’s a brand new Whataburger minus the iconic A-Frame. What gives? Anyhow, it’s a shame that they don’t demo the old closed restaurants.
I wonder if it is just protecting the brand image. For closed Whataburgers that are converted to other businesses, you can’t really hide the shape of the building, but you can neutralize the color before something else moves in.
meanwhile…. next door: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3zh9XbqUVS4
it’ll be turned into a third world church with a hand-painted, misspelled sign on a stick out front.
There is another one on I-10 east at Uvalde got a white washing.
Don’t forget about the S. Mason location in Katy (scroll to the bottom of the link).
It’s a tribute to the Whataburgers of yesteryear
Yep, they did this in Galveston when they built a new one. Weird for sure. Why not just tear it down.
Any time a Whataburger is closed is like a death in the family
