Comment of the Day: The Savoy Hotel Implosion You Missed

“I was across the street watching the tear down on and off for the 3rd day. They had a little trouble with the elevator shaft and the chimneys. Apparently the building was built pretty solid…2 foot thick brick walls. Yesterday they etched part of the bricks in the back and about half the building came down all at once by itself, rattling the ground and putting up a huge dust cloud. Part of the fire escape fell on the parking garage next door though.” [K. Brink, commenting on Emergency Demo: The Savoy Hotel’s Final Weekend Stay Downtown]

They should have gotten Karen Lantz to come by and tear it down brick by brick!

And of course who knows what was in the dust cloud…

right, Matt. Looks like the most modest of gestures toward environmental controls: water spray & plastic sheeting in those open trucks.

I hope this link transfers: View inside west side of building BEFORE demo! It’s completely collapsed.

Those are great photos. It’s astonishing that the building was permitted to get in such bad shape without being rehabbed or replaced before now. I wonder how many large but abandoned structures there are in Houston?

    Thanks Travis!

That things looks like it was built like a brick sh*t house; why did it need to come down ? I hate to see the bill handed to the owner to pay for that. The bill will go unpaid, the city will foreclose and auction the property.

Look at the photos of the inside taken prior to the demolition (in Travis’s comment). The building looked like it was literally collapsing from the inside.

One down MANY more to go.No thanks to Bill White’s lame administration. His mouthpiece says : the City was “monitoring” the Savoy for SEVEN fricking years. How lame. He will NOT be elected US Senator from Texas.

What should Bill White have done?

    From RWB:

He should have personally torn it down, brick by brick, and donated the bricks to Project Row Houses.
