They actually took the carpet from the bedrooms with them?? If it was stained badly enough that they decided to remove it first, I would think the padding that was left would also be stained.

I have an exact replica of that clock in my living room. My grandfather built it at some point in the middle of the last century from a mail order kit that arrived unassembled. I think it may not have been stained, either.
