A reader snaps this photo of the former pink Taco Cabana drive-thru at the corner of Montrose and Westheimer, “now painted white w red stripes at the bottom” — and asks if we know what’s going in there. Fortunately, another reader has the answer:

Smoothie King, opening in a couple weeks.

Well, it definitely won’t be as congested as before. Somehow I don’t see late night party goers rushing to smoothing king.
Boo… saw the red stripes and was hoping for another 5 Guys burger joint. Guess the one @ Bunker Hill will have to do.
@#$% Smoothie King.
But isn’t there already a SK just 2 blocks south of there, by the Berryhill?
The existing Smoothie King is relocating – according to the sign on their door…
It won’t last… overpriced, if you ask me. But then again the condodwellers in the area are used to overpriced… look where they live! =P
Well that’s certainly the right area of town to get a smoothie.
The Civic Association worked with the owners of the building to get TC kicked out because they were letting the local kids from around the street hang out there after “lights out” and also were giving extra food to the homeless. This was “negative for the neighborhood”… very interesting.
There’s also a brand new Smoothie King going in at W. Alabama and Shepherd. I didn’t know we needed two Smoothie Kings within a one-mile radius (three if you count the soon-to-be-vacated Hawthorne & Montrose location).
I miss my 3am Taco C :-(
Smoothie King = Starbucks?
I don’t understand why Taco Cabana closed this location in the first place. It was always packed, or at least it seemed to be.
I agree it was a busy location. I can say I’ve visited a few times when I first moved here and was out late nights on the weekends with friends.
I stopped going because there was too much rif-raf hanging around especially around the sides of the building where you wait in the drive thru line. I stopped going because I didn’t feel safe there.
Man, that place was practically an institution. When I lived in Montrose in the 90s we would go there at the witching hours and get cheap food and sit out and watch the street freaks. Lord only knows the amount of sin that took place in those bathrooms. They should demolish that nasty old place.
