A 1940 Southgate home is in the pink — and in the blue, peach, and mint — on a corner lot 4 blocks south of Rice University’s mid-campus entrance on Stockton. Looking a bit like an Amsterdam townhome with wings (and some Floridian overtones of old Coral Gables), the property made its market debut over the weekend and has an asking price of $1.19 million. Confectionery-inspired selections continue inside.

Chocolate-stained original hardwoods sweeten the interior, which throws a little whimsy into many of the sherbet-hued formal rooms. The entry hall, for example, gets a canopy-stripe ceiling and a pair of squiggly sconces (above).
What do you see in the ink blots? Positive and negative imagery play out in the wallpaper of the updated kitchen and its breakfast nook.Â
Tiger, Tiger is burning bright in the family room; faux tiger grain finishes out the trim, mirrors, stair risers, some of the bookcases and a wall of French doors facing a covered porch near the yard. That cats don’t like water might explain why the room’s wet bar is left faux-free:
All the bedrooms are upstairs, where cream filling appears to be the prevailing color wash:
Fan lights flank a stub of chimney that has been left in rugged condition on its way through the converted attic. A space of slanted ceilings and dormers, the multipurpose room includes one of the home’s 3 full bathrooms. There’s also a powder room on the first floor.
Much of the 9,000-sq.-ft. lot features well-established and sculpted landscaping. Lattice inserts trim the porch off the family room. Larger sections of it, covered in vines, form part of the side yard’s light-flickering fence:
HCAD indicates the 4,060 sq.-ft. home was renovated in 1987, and that the current family has owned it for 20 years.

Do I really have to say what those sconces look like? No? Good.
Love, love the dark floors on the first floor!
I would say more Bermuda than Coral Gables—I actually like what they’ve done for the most part–that scalloped ceiling lamp is very cool–I’ve always liked Southgate (tho not that crazy about the name, I understand why it’s named, I just think it sounds more like a mall than a neighborhood)
Nothing here a few cans of paint, some trim, and mind bleach cannot fix.
