A portion of the Riviana Foods complex at Summer and Taylor Streets in the First Ward was torn down this week. Reader Rony Canales’s panoramic photos of the former Riviana processing building and a few accompanying structures show the demo in process (above) and a little further along in the process (below):

The demolished structures at 1702 Taylor St. are on the superblock surrounded by Sawyer, Summer, Winter, and Henderson streets, one block north of the Silos on Sawyer project at the former Mahatma and Success Rice silos.

Draw a line extending Congress Ave. That’s the southern boundary of the First Ward. This is in the Sixth Ward.
Yes, but the grid shifts at Houston Ave, so I always thought Washington was the divide between First and Sixth Wards.
Besides, the entire area is now branded the First Ward Arts District.
Anybody know what it’s going to be or who is financing the demolition?
I’m curious what’s going to happen with the old rice storage warehouse lot at Sawyer and Taylor Street) that was torn down in April ’15. Seems to me we don’t need anymore 4 story townhomes (Beehives) and definitely don’t need the 5 story apartment complexes like the ones on Yale Street in The Heights (they look like a fancy prison!) Anyone hear anything about this property?
