Christian’s Tailgate Opening on White Oak

Here’s a tailgater’s-eye-view of the former Heights Camphouse BBQ at 2820 White Oak, about to be reborn as the third location of Christian’s Tailgate Bar and Grill. The Heights Life blog posted a closeup view of the TABC notice posted on the front door earlier this week. Onion Creek Coffee House is less than 100 yards to the west.

  • Love its so non-suburban looking! I bet it’ll be a swell place to hang out at.

  • Why is everyone so game to jump ship from Onion Creek? Best potato salad, ever.. Good burgers and dogs too. More TV’s sure doesn’t excite me much…

  • I soooo miss my Camphouse bbq chicken salads with ranch dressing, but I will definitely settle for a Christian’s burger with ranch for my fries instead!

  • THAT IS FABULOUS NEWS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Corey, you are right on the money, but having those other places over there on the block hasn’t seemed to have hurt OC.

Personally, I can’t wait to go to all of these places. I just hope Christian’s knocks some holes in those walls. Camphouse BBQ could be an awful dismal place to eat with almost no outside light coming at all.

  • I love Onion Creek, but not for its food or burgers. It’s burgers are cooked at Dry Creek and reheated at Onion Creek. EWWWW. I don’t think either one will hurt the other’s business. In fact, they’ll help each other’s business.

  • Jessie,

I’ve seen buildings like this in the suburbs. Oh, by the way, wasn’t the Heights one of Houston’s original suburbs?

  • Martin, I hope you’re right about adding windows. I use to take my food to go because the atmosphere was dark (and smokey).

Onion Creek will be just fine. I’ll hit Christian’s for burgers, Onion for dogs, Dry Creek for more burgers…dang, I better get some veggies into that rotation.

  • “Oh, by the way, wasn’t the Heights one of Houston’s original suburbs?”

Um, yes when people had to WALK to get everywhere, or at best could afford to take the street car…. at that time it was the “first suburb” of a tiny growing town. However, by modern standards the location of the Heights is anything but suburban… the attitude and atmosphere of the Heights is another issue.

Things change…. You probably wouldn’t describe downtown Houston today the way you might have over 100 years ago either.

So the Heights was “suburban” 100 years ago… well, I work downtown and my office is located on what was originally farmland and a large Queen Anne mansion. So, does that make me a farmer or a chamber maid?

  • I don’t see onion creek being hurt by christian’s. If anything Onion Creek has spread out it’s business by opening 3 other establishments. I like it though, o.c. Isn’t nearly as crowded as it used to be.

  • This review is for the Heights location. The front third of the place has an icehouse kinda feel, but those big open holes where windows should be are gonna make it real hot in there real soon, hope they can close them by August and turn on the AC. We opted to sit in the back area. A few booths as you go in, very plain, then into a larger area with flat screens plastered all over and a bar in one corner, a few scattered tables, quite a few “dead spaces” that could be table areas. The screens only seemed capable of displaying one baseball game……nothing else…….one channel. Anyway we ordered the sliders w fries and a burger mit everything w onion rings ($1.00 extra) My wife said the sliders were ok buns could be better, and her fries were decent, pretty close to that “batter coating” texture that Geno’s Cheesesteak does so perfectly. My burger med well was med well cooked, but everything else I could have gotten better and at the same price at one of the Creeks, or Wendys. My rings were grease laden, stuck together and where’s the onion?? No coaster for the beer, tables very sticky. The service was good, our waitperson attentive. Folks, this is a Sports Bar, or I guess that’s what the owners think will “work” in that location…..do not go there for a meal.
