Joe V’s Smart Shop on Antoine: H-E-B’s Prototype Big Box Grocery Store

H-E-B is testing a new no-frills warehouse-style grocery concept with a new store set to open early next month at 12035 Antoine, about a mile and a half north of the Beltway at the corner of Veterans Memorial. The prototype Joe V’s Smart Shop will be nearly twice the size of the typical H-E-B Pantry, reports the Chronicle‘s David Kaplan:

Smaller than a full-size H-E-B, Joe V’s will carry about 9,000 items, compared with a traditional supermarket, which has about 37,000.

Joe V’s might have five ketchups, while a full-size H-E-B would have 25, [Houston VP Armando] Perez said. The Joe V’s ketchups will include well-known brands and H-E-B private labels.

Joe V’s will have produce and self-serve meat, seafood and bakery departments. The biggest savings will often be in the grocery and general merchandise sections, Perez said.

Also going into the shopping center, which H-E-B is developing itself: a beauty supply shop and a liquor store.

But it’s still not Trader Joe V’s.

    From kjb434:

So essentially it is an improved HEB Pantry. The Pantry label seems to have gone downhill and I guess Joe V’s will be a new way to bring it back.

I second Miz Brooke Smith’s comment.

Bring us a Trader named Joe

Trader Joes. Not going to happen. People have been asking for years but Houston is still way out of the way of their existing logistics operation.

Sounds a lot like the crappy Randall’s in Midtown. Good luck with that.

    From kjb434:

Aren’t all Randall’s pretty much crappy. They charge so much more than anybody else. They aren’t Whole Foods or Rice Epicurean ridiculous though.

I live very near this location and am quite excited about. Even more so now that I know it’s HEB related. The closest HEB to me is miles away off 249.

Actually went to this store on the weekend. Prices were great had a basket full of items that costed about $100. Normally would’ve paid $200 dollars at any other grocery store.

Only problem was that this store would not take checks or credit cards. Only debit cards and cold hard cash.

Amen on the Rosenberg Location!!!! We only have 1 store Kroger and it’s to high. If you are retired like us and on a fixed income you don’t have alot to spend. And 36/59 is an Ideal location. It’s the old Super Kmart location. And it’s vacant and for lease. HEB this is a good opt. for ya’ll and us! And this store Joe V’s Smart Shop will go over bigtime.

    From MESHA:

I heard about this store from a lady shopping @ HEB, and she told me about the amount of groceries you can buy for a small amount of money! I will be going on Monday, feels like i am getting ready for a field trip or something…………..SO excited!

  34. 34
    From Linda V:

Please put one in Rosenberg on Hwy. 90 where the old Krogers’ was. I am so tired of going to Wal-Mart. I usually go to Katy to do grocery shopping. Krogers way to expensive and Fiesta store is not clean. Please please come. Brooshire Brothers wont’ I wrote to them as well. Look Rosenberg/Richmond are booming why not! Other neighboring towns folk will come as well. Marketing folks listen to what what are saying. Now you have 3 people from rosenberg on your list. Just build and they will come that’s a promise! Wal-Mart has a monopoly on our town only big store; tons of empty cashier posts.
