Swamplot Street Sleuths: Nestled ’Neath the Costco Oaks

  • Greenway Commons: What’s that going up at the corner of Cummins and Richmond, tucked “amongst the Costco Oaks?” asks a reader:

I assumed it was a bank – there’s only one in that parking lot now which falls woefully short of standard Houston bank-to-block ratios. But the odd, football shaped structure in the background that they’re rigging appears to be for signage. Can’t find anything online.

  • The Heights: First Saturday Arts Market proprietor Mitch Cohen wants to know what the workers are up to at the Heights Christian Academy activities building on the corner of 17th St. and Ashland. Signage is down and something’s going on, he tweets:

  • yeah, I drove by the Heights Assembly of God yesterday and workers are trenching between the two buildings in the alleyway. The building has been for sale awhile, but not sure what anybody could do with it. The other building(not pictured) is actually pretty cool, and could maybe be renovated for some kind of performance space.

  • There’s also something going up at the Richmond/Weslayan intersection, across from the Costco BOA. Any ideas? That would bring our bank-to-block ratio up to the norm.

  • To be sure, the catty-corner lot is ideally suited for a bank-next-to-bank rehabilitation, but would still fall short of the ideal Houston ratio…

  • a little more digging, and the truth is revealed. http://www.loopnet.com/Attachments/7/6/7/7670B54F-5330-4B8B-ADD1-0C811772143A.pdf

    It’s a g$%#amn motherf%$&^ng Iberia Bank.

That sucks. In fact, it sucks so bad, I can’t even appreciate the irony of a bank sharing it’s name with that of a peninsula occupied by soon-to-be bankrupt countries.

  • Woo hoo! Hopefully the other site will be a Chase. I’m in desperate need of more banking solutions. If not I can settle for an Arby’s.

  • YEA! for ‘more banking solutions!’
such as an ATM which prints the bills you request.

  • The location currently going up on the CostCo pad site is an Iberia Bank ground lease. The property located at Richmond and Weslayan is owned by BBVA Compass, which operates the drive thru behind it and will eventually build a location there.

    YOU pick the colors!

  • Oh YES, I’m particularly fond of soft turquoise, with a silver gilt, deckle edge.
    Thanks!

  • When did the corner bank replace the corner gas station?

  • BTW – the demo teams “removed” the sanctuary. The building pictured is still stand though I suspect not for long.
