THE PIERCE ELEVATED’S GREAT UNCROSSING What’s going to replace the giant crosses on the east and west sides of the St. Joseph Professional Building towering over the Pierce Elevated once its new owner takes them down and redoes the exterior? “I want something that’s going to be iconic to Houston,” Boxer Property CEO Andrew Segal tells Katherine Feser. The company has commissioned artists to develop ideas for the 18-story building’s new cross-free exterior look, Segal says: “It may be something that changes at night. It could involve a projector.” Also in the plans for the 135,586-sq.-ft. building at 2000 Crawford St., which dates from 1965: new shared lounges, workspaces, and conference facilities, changes to its ground-floor retail spaces, and a new name TBD. The steel crosses were added to the building in 2009. [Houston Chronicle] Photo: Russell Hancock, via Swamplot Flickr pool
Praise the Lord …. it’s coming down!
Annndd… let the “religious orgs should be paying property taxes” discussion to begin 3, 2, 1…
I’ll bet they can find a suburban megachurch that will give them good money for those crosses. They are big and gaudy enough for the mission of those organizations.
Good riddance oppressive religious symbolism!
Great. Get that religion out of here! Wars, terrorism, broken hearts, and discrimination. Religion is fun.
Hmmm….something “iconic to Houston”….how about smashing out all the windows, lacing it with graffiti, and letting it sit and rot for 20 years? Could become the sister tower of the old Holiday Inn down the street.
I hope they can find something that does not light up the night sky as much. Houston is in an important migratory pathway for birds, and lights can confuse birds and lead to their deaths. According to recent research, it’s much worse than had been thought. http://www.npr.org/2017/10/05/555949789/light-pollution-can-impact-noctural-bird-migration
Hmmm. “Something iconic to Houston … ” Perhaps a big mosquito? A mosaic of a developer paying a bribe? A floating ball of fire ants?
@SR – You’re joking, right?
@Memebag – Jinx!
Where is commonsense commenting about how the cross causes him emotional distress?
.
I actually like a lot of what commonsense says but he gets pretty triggered when it comes to anything religious.
Thankfully ‘Murica is finally being dragged into the 21st century and antique Roman torture devices are no longer accepted as ubiquitous decoration symbols.
R’Amen
NO PROJECTORS! What? Are we Dallas?
@Memebag Or we could bring back the Holder’s Pest Control giant cockroach that used to fly over the Southwest Freeway.
@Cody how do you know Comonsense is a male? yea probably
never mind – you did not say male in your post – oops
wait – you did say “he”
As restrooms go unisex, pronouns follow.
Mark: Just an assumption. I assume you’re a male too.
.
I know that makes me …. uh. Sorry, can’t think of the word that PC folks would call someone like me. I’ve heard ‘hetronormative’ or something about “supporting a male patriarchy social system”? I just sort of give up on trying to keep up on the ‘right’ things to say and just try to be kind as much as possible
Me and my coffee are just going to sit here and watch for the religious oppression posts to start flying on Facebook.
