A Look Around the Double-Decker H-E-B and Parking Lot Replacing the Single-Story Bellaire Store

H-E-B Bellaire Market, 5130 Cedar St., Bellaire, TexasDrawings submitted this month to the city of Bellaire for approval outline how H-E-B plans to fit 6-acres of parking and replacement store onto its 3-acre lot at the intersection of Bissonnet and Cedar streets. The renderings and accompanying documentation show a roughly 75,000-sq.-ft. single-story store footprint sitting on the upper level of the planned structure, with an acre-plus of parking out front atop the all-parking lower level. The drawing at the top shows the would-be view of the design from Bissonnet (near the late-50’s supermarket building currently occupied by Randall’s); below are the proposed layouts of the upper and lower story once the existing H-E-B (also pictured above) and its retail strip friends are cleared of the way:

Here’s the ground floor plan:

And the upper story:

The view from Cedar St. shows one of the parking garage entrances and some of the street-level landscaping, including the occasional skinny green screen; a few light poles can be seen sprouting from the roof. The store’s front entrance appears to face across the upper parking lot toward South Rice Ave.:

Here’s the direct view of the front entrance, above the angled Bissonnet frontage:

A zoom-in on that elevation (in 2 parts below) shows a little more green screening upstairs:

The view from Fifth St. catches the back edge of the triangular Menchie’s Frozen Yogurt at the obtuse corner with Bissonnet (to the far right):

Building Up on Bissonnet

  • This could cannibalize business from the HEB at Buff Spwy@Bissonett, and that would be a good thing, since the latter is overcrowded (weekends, at least).

  • @Gisgo You should see the one on Bunker Hill during the weekends. There’s police directing traffic and a couple Sundays ago people were illegally parking because there were no spaces.

  • @Gisgo Don’t think it will really cannibalize much. Many of us who live near the Bellaire-Rice HEB used to go to the HEB at Buffalo Speedway & Bissonnet until the one at San Felipe & Fountain View opened, and you see that the Buffalo Speedway location is still very busy without us. Soon when the Bellaire-Rice location is no longer teeny-tiny, we will go there more often, but I predict that both the Buffalo Speedway and San Felipe locations will continue to do great. There’s a high population density near the Bellaire-Rice location that is currently driven to non-HEB stores just because the HEB at Bellaire-Rice is so itsy-bitsy and cannot carry all the things we want.

  • Looking forward to seeing this level of coverage on the new HEB slated to go in next to Museum Park (N. MacGregor @ 288). It should be a big one as this is a ‘Food Desert’ over here. And the population density is increasing by leaps and bounds. We drive all the way over to HEB on Alabama & Dunlavy, (And to the Montrose Kroger when we need the convenience, and my Senior Discount there).

  • This is nice and all and great design and engineering but HEB should have beat Walmart and purchased the land at south rice and Westpark.

  • I would rather have Hong Kong Chef than this congestion magnet.

  • This is going to be great. We currently shop at this HEB and love it. Wonder what will happen to Randall’s. Who cares, they are terrible.

  • let the Walmart @ rice & westpark be as this location is inside of & controlled by the Uptown Houston TIRZ and property tax rate is higher in Houston than in Bellaire.

  • With all of the applause for the HEB supersizing, you’d think the people of Bellaire were living in a food desert. Not knocking everyone’s First World right to shop at 8 different humongous grocery stores but there are some parts of town that don’t even have a decent “regular” sized grocery store.
    .
Disclosure: I am one of these lucky people who can shop at 8 different humongous stores – but I only really shop at one regularly. I miss Hong Kong Chef, too.
