You just don’t know what you’ve lost until it’s gone and you’ve forgotten all about it.
With today’s knocking of the Salmex Auto & Truck Sales building at 1819 N. Shepherd Dr. (pictured above from earlier today), the great used-car-lot-to-restaurant-row transformation of North Shepherd begins! Er . . . continues. On the site of this spot will flourish: a parking lot! And a pretty big one. But further in on 18th St. is the planned site of Foreign Correspondents, which bills itself as a “farm to table” Thai restaurant. Further in and attached to it will be tavern and whiskey bar Hunky Dory from the operators of DownHouse and Feast alumnus Richard Knight.

Pardon us while we squash a few bugs.
Yesterday demo crews began tearing down 2 buildings at Westbury Square, the once-quaint pedestrian shopping district at West Bellfort and Chimney Rock that in recent decades has been overtaken by a combination of bigger-box retailing (see the Home Depot lurking in the background of the photo at left) and neglect. Long-dilapidated Buildings 1 and 5 at 635 Westbury Sq. are being removed under an agreement with the city after a longstanding battle over a “repair or demolish” order, according to the Westbury Area Improvement Corporation. But owner Alfred Antonini still has 9 other 1962-vintage buildings standing on the property, according to appraisal district records.
From the ashes we can build another day. But for now, let’s crush these:
From a reader’s camera to your ears: The McDonald’s on the southwest corner has been demolished.

Today, the end of a few nonferrous extrusions, crossings, and turnberries.
A handful of curious neighbors and passers-by have written Swamplot with reports that the Crossing at Kirby Apartments at 7600 Kirby Dr. are being cleared out. “It appears the whole complex is about to be demolished,” writes one correspondent who snooped around the 5.76-acre compound that stretches from South Main to a gas station short of S. Braeswood. “Looks like they’re disconnecting electrical and there was one U-Haul truck but it’s otherwise abandoned,” writes another. “Apartment windows are boarded and one building looks like the roof has started to be stripped.” Gee, what could be happening here?
