Saluting cacti and other Western ware lead to a home off the range — but just a short cul-de-sac away from Memorial Dr., west of Voss Rd. And beyond the curbside get-up, it’s a puffed-up country cabin in Piney Point Village. Earlier this month, the dark-stained wooden-clad 1981 home in Ames Place debuted on the market with a $1.75 million asking price.
Renovations have added more than $1.5 million to the asking price of a 1988 townhome in Briar Hollow’s gated Raintree community. Inside, the floors are now so polished a Zamboni driver might get jealous. The 2-pool property’s shined-up version made its market re-entry at the end of August with a $2.875 million price tag. It sold this January for $1.299 million — after more than a year on the market had whittled down the ask from an initial (October 2011) $2 million.
Big shoulders on a 1928 property in Idylwood look as if the muscular house remodeled in 2000 could transform into an action figure, pull itself out of its slab, and head across the street toward a bend in Brays Bayou. As it is, however, the home’s porch, deck, and side-car vantage points will have to do for the bayou view. The double-lot spread appeared on the market at the end of August and has a $325,000 asking price.
Somewhere under the ’80s remodeling of this angular home clad in contemporary-ish stucco and cement board lie what HCAD logs as a 1920 residence and its 1950-vintage addition. Located on a corner lot across from Reagan High School, the Houston Heights property-with-parapet hit the market Tuesday and has a $420,000 price tag.
A megasized 1920 “cottage” in the gated community of Shadyside has knocked a couple mil off its asking price; it’s now at $8.9 million, compared with the $11.5 million in its March 2013 debut. All the home’s chimneys atop the steep-and-shingled faux-thatched roof signal a plethora of stately fireplaces inside. Most of the blaze is outside, however, when the extensive gardens surrounding the property are in bloom (at right).
Pits and platforms change up the floor plan of a 1965 home in Meyerland with double-decker expanses of glass. Once home to architect Arthur Steinberg, the property arrived on the market just before the holiday weekend. The asking price is $750,000.
Tucked against the South Loop near Stella Link, a mishmash of townhomes mostly built in the mid-sixties and seventies has a somewhat newer neighbor in this 2003 home. It further expands that novelty status by including what could be the only open lot in the small neighborhood of lot-filling homes installed cheek-to-jowl and close to the meandering streets. The property (with property) landed on the market Thursday after refinishing its wooden floors and adding some new carpet and paint. It has a $499,000 asking price.
One of these Beall St. Townhomes in Shady Acres Extension — within a row built in 2002 — gets a bit of shade, On Tuesday, a midsized member of the similar but not identical housing octet popped up on the market. Price tag: $499,500. As with its neighbors, the close-to-the-street home is perched on a pier-and-beam foundation; the entry is up a few steps and behind a short iron fence off the sidewalk and gully drainage. Meanwhile, the sitting porch streetside has a back-of-house cousin (above right), each looking over a bit of grass and adjacent properties.
Its earlier morph from 1940 cottage to pet grooming shop with easy-care flooring could remain or revert to home use, declares the listing for this property in Dearborn Place. It’s tucked behind a couple of strip centers fronting S. Shepherd, just south of West Alabama. Pens and gated areas — inside and out — make it easy to contain any unruly guests, as do the quarters out back.
Two years ago, this previously renovated 1949 Oak Forest home sold for $189,000. Its listing last week comes with a $293,000 price tag. The property, on a street that’s mostly original housing stock, is located east of Rosslynn Rd. and around the corner from the Frank Black Middle School campus entrance on Piney Woods Dr. The back of Oak Forest Elementary School is a longer hike east toward 43rd St.
