The Huntingdon, 2121 Kirby Dr., Upper Kirby, HoustonA slideshow featured on the website of the Houston Business Journal (and noted in our Headlines post this morning) features the 7 most expensive homes sold in Houston last year. Coming in at No. 3 is the full-floor Huntingdon condo unit where former Enron CEO Ken Lay used to live. 2121 Kirby Dr. Unit 33 and its mopey-castle-in-the-sky interior (shown below after the furniture was removed) was listed for sale by his widow, Linda Lay, back in 2010 and featured on Swamplot occasionally over the following years as it hopped on and off the market a few times and descended in fits and starts from an initial (off-market) asking price of $12.8 million to the mid-single-digit millions. MLS and county tax records show the 9-bathroom, 6-elevator, 12,827-sq.-ft. pièd-a-terre with the $10K+ monthly maintenance fee finally sold last February to an entity controlled by another local CEO, for a (still-record-making, but more than half-off) $5.5 million, though the list price had by that time fallen $100K lower.

The half-an-acre lot in Old Braeswood, down Main Street from the Texas Medical Center, means there’s a yard left despite additions and expansions over the years to a 1938 home. Relisted a week ago, the stately property is trying again with another price reduction: $2.399 million. Its initial listing in April 2013 held out hopes for just under $3 million. A couple adjustments by $200K and $300K took it down to $2.499 million before a holiday hiatus.

From the exterior, a midcentury modern in Meyerland looks much as it has for decades, reports a longtime admirer of the property. The 1965 home incorporates stone in many forms, from the dark craggy accents on its crushed-rock facade to the paved, no mow yard (top) interspersed with landscaped pods. And as of last Friday, when it debuted on the open market (for the first time in at least 20 years, according to a source), we can ogle its innards: There’s a pool tucked into the front of the footprint, so the entry doors open to an interior walkway past the water and ending at the door. The approach is on display from the step-down section of living space facing the poolscape through a broad wall of floor-to-ceiling windows.

But it’s the ample deployment of recessed lighting that really amps up the interior. The towering property sits on the corner of a fenced, half-built half-block just west of McKee St. and north of a Metro bus barn near a bend in Buffalo Bayou and its bike trail. The home landed on the market earlier this month, asking $645,000.

Tucked on a lot that hugs the curve of a Spur 527 access road east of Montrose Blvd., a 1930 cottage in the Fitze Home neighborhood — also referred to as Roseland Estates — has been serving as the home office of an air conditioning business. The updated Montrose-area property blew onto the market last week as a home-or-office listing with a $335,000 price tag. That includes the upgrades to the electrical and AC systems.
